Getting started as a herping photographer can feel a little intimidating, but it can completely change your experience. If you’re not sure where to begin, you’re in the right place! This guide will help you figure out exactly where to start and how to dive in.

Understanding The Basic of Photography

Before going on your next Herping adventure it’s essential to understand the basics of photography. Understanding the connection between shutter speed, aperture, and ISO is key. The exposure triangle diagram is a visual representation of how these three parts interact to create a well-exposed picture. If you’re using a DSLR camera, take advantage of its ability to change the settings to capture the perfect shot. If you’re a beginner to photography, make sure to practice with the settings on your camera before going out to photograph reptiles and amphibians; otherwise, you may be disappointed with the results.

Once you’re comfortable with using your camera, the next step is to understand the Rule of Thirds for better image composition. Imagine your frame split into 9 equal sections by 2 vertical and 2 horizontal lines, creating a grid. The basis of the rule is to place key elements of the scene along these lines or at their intersections. This creates a more balanced engaging composition.

What Gear You Need

The next step to Herp photography is making sure you have the right gear. The most crucial is, of course, a camera. Preferably a DSLR camera, the most popular tend to be a Canon Rebel t7, Canon 80D, or the Canon EOS-R. To capture the perfect close up shot, using a 180 mm macro lens is essential. Another piece of gear to consider purchasing is an external flash source especially if you’re taking pictures at night. There are plenty of different external flashes out there that would work. Having a trusty tripod could be beneficial to allow you to set up your shot and wait for the subject to enter the frame. Utilizing a diffuser is the last crucial part of herp photography because it can help balance out the light of the subject and give the image more depth.

Preparation For Herping

Herping can be both mentally and physically taxing on your body so preparing yourself before the big trek is necessary. Discover the right herping tour that would be best for you, before you begin preparing. The search for the reptiles can require lots of hiking which can be exhausting to your body. Ensuring you have the right clothing and shoes can help make your experience hiking more enjoyable. Choose comfortable clothing that have long sleeves and long pants to protect your skin, a wide-brimmed hat to protect your skin from the sun, gloves in case you come in contact with venomous creatures, and sturdy boots to help you through the uneven terrain. Mentally prepare by understanding it’s going to be a long trek and you must keep expectations low because nature doesn’t always cooperate.

After completing your adventure, make sure to rest after your herping expedition to allow your body to recover for the next!
