Must-Have Tools for Every Herping Adventure

Before going on your next herping adventure, it’s important to have a checklist to make sure you have everything you need. Having a checklist ensures that you don’t forget anything. Here is your go to checklist for the next you go herping.

Personal Items
Pack sunscreen and insect repellent to protect against sunburn and bug bites. Include a small first-aid kit with essentials like cloth band-aids, alcohol pads, antibiotic cream, antihistamine cream (Benadryl), and pain relievers such as ibuprofen. Prescription medications should be carried in their original containers along with a copy of your prescriptions.

Prepare for unexpected illnesses with cold tablets, antihistamines, cough drops, anti-diarrhea medicine, and eye drops. These items can save the day if you encounter minor health issues in remote locations.

Clothing
When going on a herping tour, it’s important to wear the right clothes to stay comfortable and safe. For footwear, rubber boots work well in muddy areas, lightweight hiking shoes are perfect for long treks, and sandals are handy for river crossings.

Pack both long and short-sleeved shirts, long sleeves offer protection from sun, bugs, and scratches, while short sleeves are ideal for hotter conditions. Quick-drying pants or zip-off convertible pants are practical and lightweight. Bring plenty of quick-drying socks, a raincoat or poncho for sudden downpours, and a lightweight jacket for chilly evenings. A wide-brimmed hat or a cap with a neck flap is essential for sun protection.

Equipment
Having the right equipment can make your experience more enjoyable, productive, and safe. A water-resistant headlamp is a must since many reptiles and amphibians are more active at night. It lets you see clearly while keeping your hands free, but it’s always a good idea to bring a backup flashlight just in case. To keep track of what you find, bring a notebook and pens to jot down notes about the animals, their habitats, or anything interesting you see. If you plan to handle snakes, collapsible snake hooks and tongs are great tools that help you do so safely and without stressing the animals. A lightweight backpack or fanny pack is handy for carrying your gear while keeping your hands free to explore. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle so you can stay hydrated while you’re out in the field. With these basics, you’ll be ready for a fun and successful herping adventure.

Travel Essentials
If you’re traveling internationally, ensure you have your passport, visa, and international vaccination certificates. Carry cash in small denominations, ATM cards, a copy of your travel insurance policy, and a list of emergency contacts. Having these items on hand ensures a smooth and stress-free trip.

Camera Gear
Capturing your herping experiences is rewarding so pack a digital camera with extra memory cards and a battery charger. Depending on your skill level, bring different lens types, like macro, wide angle, and telephoto for options. Having an external flash unit and softbox helps achieve the perfect photo.

A tripod is essential for stable shots, especially in low-light conditions. Bring rechargeable batteries, plug adapters for local electrical sockets, and plastic bags with silica gel to prevent lens fogging. Use a sturdy camera backpack or Pelican case for protection, and keep a cleaning kit handy for maintaining your gear in the field.

A successful herping adventure depends on preparation and the right gear. Whether you’re trekking through muddy wetlands or documenting rare species at night, having the essentials ensures both safety and enjoyment. With this checklist, you’re ready to explore and appreciate the incredible world of reptiles and amphibians.
